LOVE MY HOME, HATE THE ESTATE.

The people of Willenhall argue that their town is deteriorating due to the shocking crimes that have been occurring during the past twelve months. From murders to anti-social behaviour, local youths are making the Willenhall area and the New Invention neighbourhood a fearful place to live.

The population of Willenhall is 12,445 people, around 6.7 per cent of working-age people on the borough claim jobseeker’s allowance. In 2011, the average wage in the Black Country was estimated to be around £22,000. Almost 300 people in Walsall are claiming £26,000 or more in benefits a year, new figures have revealed. A total of 299 people are collecting benefits, which are higher than the average Black Country wage.

According to West Midlands Police there has been an increase in reports of Anti Social Behaviour on the Beacon Estate, New Invention, with groups of youths being verbally abusive and rowdy towards residents, as well as causing minor damage.

I ask myself, is it due to being out of work that leads people to commit these local crimes?
